Twenty or thirty years ago, finding the right career was limited by lack of global internet tools, restricted by more old-fashioned (if you will) values and opinions, and less important than finding yourself. I recall when my therapist, the savior of all saviors as far as Im concerned, laughed with me over how I had gone about finding the right career: I had taken all the courses I found interesting and many I hoped were somehow related, then tried to decide on a major/career.

She gently joked that many people decide first, then do the footwork of taking the required and necessary and relevant courses, doing internships, and getting in at some entry-level. Clearly, I didnt have the tools we do today for finding the right career, or I didnt know about their existence and usefulness, at least.

For example, a lot of students will use personality testing and employment/goal assessments for finding the right career right from the start of their semesters in college. ERIK, Psychometric testing tools, and career skills assessment batteries will help to define aptitude and save you time futzing around with majors and minors that you THINK you MIGHT like when six years later decide you need to start all over finding the right career, as offshore drilling is not for you or interplanetary travel studies will take too long or anthropological studies of tribes now extinct are wiped off the college catalogs three quarters of the way into your educational plan.

A fantastic implement of guidance, information, and statistical projection for finding the right career is the Index to Careers Guide, created, updated/maintained, and provided both online and off (in college and high school career centers, for instance) by the U.S. Department of Labor/Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The workbooks (and books) have you take intensive (but interesting, fun) quizzes that lead you to slowly but surely deduce or do a process of illimination experiment that helps you in finding the right career FOR YOU not your Mom, your dead Grandfather, or the culture around you who has all kinds of opinions about who you are and who you should be but who does not pay your rent or feed your kids when push comes to shove. Nor are they the ones who need to live in your skin, sleep through the night, or answer to your higher needs and greater consciousness

They are also taking new business at out-of-town shopping centres, concessions within other retailer’s outlets, and travel-related locations such as railway stations, airports and motorway service stations. Profitability of the branded operators is assisted by the fact that outlets outside London, in particular, are likely to reach a level of profit more quickly than those in high-rental, prime central-London locations.
Growth is supported by the continued increase in the proportions of 45 to 54 year-olds within the total population, of ABs and of women in employment all of whom are prime customers of coffee and sandwich shops. The preference for eating at these venues, rather than having lengthier and more expensive lunches at restaurants, is sustained by the continuing need for shorter lunches within a busier working life. In addition, many women choose to eat at coffee and sandwich shops, as they are perceived to offer a ‘lighter’ and more friendly atmosphere.
The leaders in the branded coffee-shop segment are Starbucks, Costa and Caffe Nero, while their equivalents in the branded sandwich-shop segment are Subway, Pret A Manger, Bakers Oven, O’Briens and Benjys. These are gaining share within the total branded outlets sectors, particularly through their offering of a wider range of food and drink products. These are often higher-margin items, improving profitability, with this tactic blurring the distinction between coffee and sandwich shops in general.
The ‘top ten’ branded coffee-shop according operators are estimated to a study available on www.marketsensus.com to now represent 59.3% of the total branded sector in terms of outlet numbers and 70.6% by turnover. All branded coffee shops are estimated to account for 31% of the total coffee-shop market by outlet numbers, and 34% by turnover.

The sandwich-shop sector is more complex, with one estimate putting the total number of
cafes and takeaway food shops at around 30,000. The more major branded sandwich shops represent only a very small share of this total, although Subway, Pret A Manger and Bakers Oven account for an estimated 72.2% of the ‘top 10’ branded shops by outlet numbers, and 79.1% by turnover.
Despite growing competition from other retailers such as grocery multiples and department or variety stores the branded coffee- and sandwich-shop sectors are predicted to grow at a rate of between 7% and 11.8% per year in value terms over the period from 2005 to 2009. The total coffee-shop sector is estimated to grow at a rate of between 3.9% and 5.3% per year, reflecting anticipated gains in share by the branded coffee-shop operators.

How to Fish Better

Yet despite this truism, one of Australia’s leading recruiters, author Toby Marshall, is convinced the sector is fundamentally failing employers and jobseekers alike.

It sounds like the beginning of an off-colour joke: what is the only industry where the salespeople control the quality of the product they’re hawking? The answer of course is the recruitment industry. Yet despite this truism, one of Australia’s leading recruiters, author Toby Marshall, is convinced the sector is fundamentally failing employers and jobseekers alike.

Whether in person or in his new book, Get great people: Your roadmap to hiring the best, Mr. Marshall doesn’t mince words about the industry charged with rounding up willing and able workers for eager bosses facing a scarcity of skilled labour. For starters, he doesn’t believe there is a talent scarcity.

“It’s a perceived shortage”, says Mr. Marshall, the director of Abacus Recruitment Solutions. “People are all fishing in the same pond ... People believe there is a shortage because recruitment says there is. But you’ve got to define talent more broadly. You’ve got to fish differently from everyone else.” He says the country’s current unemployment rate of just over five per cent is misleading; the percentage of people who are underemployed (he points out that one need only to work 90 minutes a week to be considered employed) is around 15 per cent.

Mr. Marshall also doesn’t put much stock in what he calls the “non-debate” that is industrial relations reforms — saying that bosses, workers and politicians all seem to be missing the point. The issue isn’t just creating jobs and filling them. “The real issue is creating jobs people actually want to work in”, he says. “People only want a couple of things: we want a job where we can feel useful and feed our kids. Nothing else matters. Everything else is crap.” Yet time and again, Mr. Marshall says, recruiters continue to lose sight of what matters to workers and what employers need.

The root of all evil

The biggest problem with traditional recruiters is the vast majority of them work on strict commission and want 100 per cent of their fee paid up front, regardless if the employees they supply are a good fit or end up staying with a company long enough to become profitable. Mr. Marshall writes in his book that a good recruiter needs to have experience, maturity and industry knowledge, and without these prerequisites their advice becomes questionable. Unfortunately, the driving force behind many recruiters is not to deliver thoughtful advice on which candidates are best suited for which roles, but to make a “sale” at any cost.

“If the consultant’s earnings are commission-driven it can be difficult to receive trustworthy advice”, Mr. Marshall writes. “Over 90 per cent of recruiters are on commission-based remuneration, which undermines the objectivity of their advice. How is your consultant being paid?”

Mr. Marshall writes that it is crucial to find a consultant who won’t force “bodies” or useless ads on bosses who need to hire. Often, many agencies use impressive-looking senior sales people to sell to a company looking for workers, but then delegate the actual recruiting to a junior staff member with less experience and fewer connections.

There is tremendous turnover in the recruitment field — the average tenure of a new consultant is only between six and 11 months. Mr. Marshall says the reason why so many leave the industry so soon is because of the stress of putting sales over delivery.

“Most young recruiters today are young, untrained, inexperienced and under pressure”, he says. “It’s a very bad combination.”

To improve recruiting practices, companies need to find consultants who are willing to take their payments over the long haul rather than expect a full commission up front. Mr. Marshall suggests a 25/25/50 split: 25 per cent when the recruiter starts working, 25 per cent when the recruited employee starts working, and 50 per cent after about a three-month period when it’s clear the employee has become established in the job and a good fit for the company.

Unfortunately, most recruiters baulk at the idea of delaying their commission payments over such a long period. The trend is to keep the notion of recruitment divorced from the notion of retention. In other words, most consultants take the money, fill the job and run.

An in-sourced solution

Mr. Marshall writes in his book:

“The simple truth is: most people can be good employees if they are in the right job and the right company at the right stage in their career. Beware the recruitment consultant who tells you otherwise and tries to convince you they have ‘great people’ on their books.”

One of the main arguments of Get great people is that too often talented workers end up in the wrong place at the wrong time of their careers. How do talented people end up in the wrong job? Mr. Marshall writes:

• “They focus on money and not other important factors

• “They were pushed into it by a recruitment consultant who was keen to ‘sell’ them to the company regardless of fit.”

If companies want to avoid the pitfalls of traditional recruitment, HR managers must realize they have the power to take charge of their own hiring — provided they cherry pick sensible strategies from the recruitment industry and marry them to a broader philosophy about employment. For example: one of the mistakes HR managers often make is buying one-time ads in newspapers or on the web each time a position becomes available. Mr. Marshall suggests doing what the recruiters do — buying bundles of 10 ads and advertising a position four times. A simple strategy, but it works. Conversely, a shift in philosophy for an HR manager involves defining talent more broadly than recruiters do and to refrain from passing judgment on potential employees based strictly on the hard skills (or lack thereof) on their resumes.

“It continues to amaze me: most companies hire on skill and fire on fit”, says Mr. Marshall. He points out that to locate people with the precise skills to do a particular job, hire them, and discover that they aren’t a good fit for the culture of the company, and then get rid of them, is a costly and inefficient way to operate. Conversely, to hire workers who are an excellent fit for the company and who have some of the needed skills (or skills broadly related to the needed skills) and then train them to fill the gaps in their knowledge makes much more sense. Yet companies remain reluctant to do this.

The interviewing process is another area that needs a radical shake-up, according to Mr. Marshall. Usually, the person who will be the successful candidate’s direct manager along with his or her own direct manager are the ones who conduct job interviews. “But what do most job ads say?” asks Mr. Marshall. “They say ‘we are looking for a team player’. What does that even mean? It usually means we want a compliant person who will work their ass off for the company.” If employers are serious about getting a team player, Mr. Marshall says; why not invite one or more members of the actual team to participate in the interview? As these people will be working alongside the new employee, they may be able to provide some insight into whether he or she will make a good fit for the team.

Gen Y not?

Much has been written about what the elusive workers from Generation Y (born after 1977) want in a career, and Mr. Marshall holds strong opinions about what it takes to recruit and retain this pool of talent. He dismisses a recent study that shows Gen Yers are primarily concerned with how much money they will be making and says they are no more or less greedy than anyone else.

“It’s hard to pin down anything about this generation, but if you can say one thing about them it’s that they travel in packs”, he says. “They travel in packs and they want to work in an environment that is fun; [essentially] they want to want to work in a good pack.”

By taking some of the emphasis away from hard skills and focusing on relationships between team players, companies will find it easier to acquire and hold on to younger workers. Often, Gen Yers turn to their ever-expanding network of friends, rather than the newspaper or the web, to get the jump on good jobs. Likewise, managers should consider hiring new workers from existing employees’ circle of friends and acquaintances. There may even come a day when companies will be more inclined to hire whole packs of friends rather than just individuals.

Despite their reputation for flip-flopping from job to job, Gen Yers can master loyalty, says Mr. Marshall, so long as companies are willing to focus on what’s important to them. This means keeping the job and the work environment exciting, keeping workers updated on where their careers are going, and paying them well. Many young workers also look for companies that share their values and have a conscience — or at least appear to have a conscience. “Many of these young people are very idealistic”, says Mr. Marshall, “even if they themselves do bugger all about it.”

Some other helpful hints

Whether hiring from Gen Y, Gen X, a semi-retired Boomer, or someone in between, you may find yourself having to hold your nose and hire a recruiter to provide you with candidates. If this is the case, Get great people offers a lot useful questions to ask recruiters before you commission them. They include:

• “What salary range is appropriate for this role? A really strong indicator of whether they know what is going on ‘out there’, in your field. Knowing the salary range will also help you define the type of person you are seeking.

• “Can I talk to some of your long-standing clients? If you get fobbed off on this question it is very revealing — and a real danger sign.

• “Do you provide the applicant’s original resume? This is an important point, as many consultants retype the resumes before they hand them to you. Why? To standardise the resume and put it on the recruiter’s letterhead — it’s branding their company. If they retype, insist they give you the original resume also. The original will give you useful information such as how the applicant writes, how they present on paper, and perhaps some important negative information about them (you will find that the recruiter’s standardisation sometimes loses negatives!)”

There are no serious businesses fast enough that allow you to make a lot of money at the first four months. Anyway I could not attract the customers as I wanted to.

What is the moral of story? Many things to learn and it bring a lot of work. Yes, a lot of work. It is business not holidays. However it is a pleasant work, a pleasant based business.

I have had fear throughout this way. I learned that I should promote my web site. And to do that I should write articles, exchange links, post in forums, edit a Blog and many other things to get back links to my site.

Yep, you read that right. That is all it takes to build a work at home based business opportunity. And it is more. Does it threat you, or hinders you fallow the same way?

I would like you consider one thing: many people use to say that if you think you can do it, so you can. Or in contrast, if you think you can not, you will can not. Well, this thought is very important because it take us face to face with our dreams.

You are partners with your clients, customers and prospects on projects, contracts, campaigns, programs and special events. When you help customers get what they want, you get what you want. Always ask yourself how can you help them look good, excel and succeed. When Improv games work most effectively each partner's actions help the other look good. As a sales and service professional your work shouldn’t just be about making yourself look good. First, help your clients look good and you’ll shine in the process.

Be Spontaneous. So often we are bound by rules and regulations, restrictions and proscriptions. Sometimes we're so bogged down we can't respond to the issue at hand. There are times our colleagues and customers expect and deserve our abilities to think and act on our feet in a spontaneous manner. In a world where we are quick to champion an "adapt or die" philosophy we must not forget the ability to be spontaneous, making decisions by feel and impulsively as the case may call for. Be ready, willing and able to eschew guidelines and apply creativity to solve problems and your clients succeed. Give yourself permission to be spontaneous and admire the results.

Say "Yes, AND… ." So often we are apt to respond to comments, suggestions and inquiries with some variation of "Yes, but…" The impact is immediate: whatever "offer" being advanced is now qualified, mitigated, diminished or otherwise muted. Your customer's world of possibilities has just been restricted. The idea in question, once ripe with potential, has now been shackled. When we instead respond "Yes, and…" it builds on what has been said, allowing for both parties to co-create a solution. Instead of a competition between ideas or a zero-sum game where just one point of view prevails, now both parties are actively creating solutions and future success scenarios.

Teaming With Success

Teamwork is the lubricant of success in the marketplace. Spontaneity and a sincere respect for your clients facilitates teamwork. Your spontaneity is a gift to your customers. “…As in any artistic endeavor, we must learn to trust our impulses and be ourselves." The problem of leaky company email servers has been around since the last decade. Considering the length of time it has been around and the ton of information available on how to fix this problem, it boggles the mind that this very problem still exists today.

Just exactly what is this "leaky problem" in email servers? The common term for this problem is "open relay".

Back in the days when the monstrosity known today as "spamming" was yet unheard of, email servers did not have to filter outgoing email according to allowed networks or domains. In other words, email senders from outside of your company's network were allowed to relay through your email server. It was convenient for companies related to one another at that time to share a common email server because most internet access was via dial-up lines and the cost of a dedicated line was still very expensive. Every now and then, an unknown sender would gain relay access but most network administrators would just turn a blind eye even if this act spoke of bad netiquette. After all, the internet was still about sharing during those days.

Over time, the abusers came. The network administrators were slow in plugging the open relay because this kind of activity was yet unheard of and no patch would be available for the server software. The server software makers were just being alerted to this new form of network abuse. When the software makers were able to solve the open relay problem, the damage was too big to contain. The abusers have now discovered a new albeit unscrupulous means of getting their messages across. The cat and mouse chase was on.

A decade later, the chase is still on and it is quite apparent the mouse is running rings around the cat. Spammers are still using their trusty old open relay scanner which scours the net for leaky email servers. But these days, not only spammers are checking for leaks; they have been joined in the hunt by cyber criminals. While spammers send nothing more than annoying marketing pitches, the cyber criminals can actually clean out your bank accounts through the phishing email scams they send out.

If you are new to phishing, it is the method by which scammers send you an official looking email such as from your bank, credit card company or a website that you have done business with. They give you the story that they need you update your account or you risk cancellation. Then you should click a link on the email to take you to a website where you can update your personal information. The link is really a cleverly disguised web server that will gather the personal information that you input. Once the information is in the hands of the scammer, you know what they will do next.

Many phishing email scams' method of operation are taken from the spammers' handbook--utilizing open relays in unsuspecting email servers. Open relays are often the result of the administrator's inexperience, lack of knowledge, carelessness or outright laziness. Most modern unix/linux based email servers have anti-relaying mechanisms built in, and while we have no experience with Windows based email servers, we would like to think that competent Windows based server software makers should have incorporated this feature as well. There is no set formula for configuring an email server, each business has its own unique requirements and policies to follow. But the constant should be that once the requirements and policies are in place, anti-relaying should be turned on.

Email is probably the most widely used tool in the online world. That is basically the reason why spammers and scammers exploit it to the max--the payoffs could be huge. By making sure your company's email server is not an open relay, you are also disallowing the spammers and scammers from eating into your network bandwidth. But more importantly, you are saving many email users from unwanted junk and being victimized by cyber criminals. If you do not particularly care about doing it for others, do it for yourself because the next potential phishing victim might be you.

How much do you think the website owners(kiva.org) are making money..?

I think you just need 3 things to build a company like 'kiva'.. 1, Technical skill to build a website. 2, Build contacts with local micro-financiers 3, Most importantly you need to have financial ('banking/micro-financing') background to understand and run this business or may be degree in finance.
