Many of us are interested in starting home-based businesses or quitting our full-time jobs. There is a marked difference between the psychology of the worker and that of the entrepreneur but the great flicker of hope is that the entrepreneurial consciousness could be developed. If you are tired of your day-time job and have been thinking of leaving your job and striking out on your own, you need to think about this properly. It is necessary to examine yourself and ask whether you have what it takes to be an entrepreneur; and if you don't to go ahead and start the process of developing that consciousness. This article itemises some of the characteristics of an entrepreneur as well as the method by which those characteristics could be developed.

First, be clear about why you are starting business. Why become an entrepreneur? There are various reasons that one may consider in striking to become an entrepreneur and starting one's own business. Some strike out because they hate their bosses, some because they hate their jobs, some because they hate poverty and some because they hate commuting. Becoming an entrepreneur because you hate something may not be the right attitude. It is better to strive to start your own business because you love something. When the chips are down, you will need the energy of love to sustain you in the days of adversity. It is your love of business or entrepreneurship which will keep you going when partners desert you, or a project fails, or the tax-man comes with harassment, or you face other negative circumstances. So the first thing to do is to first settle all the hatreds and rather replace them with the love of something this is done at the level of attitude. Your attitude to business will determine your altitude in success.

Second, don't go into business tabular rasa like a clean slate. You need to develop yourself along the business line. You need to learn some accounting skills, some law, some technology and some philosophy to be a good business-person. A good way to start is to join a network marketing system. When you join, don't join because of the money although you can make a whole lot of money from this business but don't make that your focus. Go with the intention of learning, especially learning to sell. To succeed in business, you need to know how to sell. You will need to sell your business ideas to partners, to sponsors, to customers, and even to members of your work-force. And one good way to learn to sell is by joining a network marketing system and taking advantage of the great training facilities provided there.

Third, understand the difference between assets and liability. Many go out into business without understanding the difference between assets and liabilities. Your knowledge in this area is very vital to your success. So get some good training before you jump in.

Forth, understand the power of systems. A business is essentially a system. Not understanding the power of systems will convert a business-man into a self-employed, and there is a difference between a business-man and a self-employed. A good business-man puts in place a system, which works irrespective of whether he is sleeping or working. The ability to do this is the difference between a business-man and a self-employed.

One needs to take a closer look at him or herself before going into business, but every attitude and characteristics required for entrepreneurial success could be developed by paying attention to critical factors, most of which are essentially psychological.

There does, however, appear to be a positive correlation between satisfaction levels in different areas of work. This suggests a single overall factor of job satisfaction. However, it seems there is no one, general, comprehensive theory which explains job satisfaction.

Today is still considered by a number of critics to be, a complex concept and difficult to measure objectively. A wide range of variables relating to individual, social, cultural organizational and environmental factors affect the level of job satisfaction. Specifically:

- Individual Factors include personality, education, intelligence and abilities, age, marital status. Orientation to work.

- Social Factors include relationships with co-workers, group working and norms, opportunities for interaction, informal organization.

- Cultural Factors include underlying attitudes, beliefs and values.

- Organizational Factors include nature and size, formal structure, personnel policies and procedures, employee relations, nature of the work, technology and work organization, supervision and styles of leadership, management systems, working conditions.

- Environmental Factors include economic, social, technical and governmental influences.

These different factors, all affect the job satisfaction of certain individuals in a given set of circumstances, but not necessarily in others. The various studies of job satisfaction have some validity and have served the businesses in times of need and performance appraisal.

A strategic way of achieving job satisfaction is to establish a corporate culture that encourages communication and is directed towards quality work. It is particularly important for employees to see excellence rewarded, to not fear making mistakes, to work in an atmosphere of helpfulness, and to see a relationship between hard work and rewards. As the tool for such strategic changes, organizational culture can be altered by reshaping functions, such as the communications systems and by building teams and creating leaders. Managing change is the challenge for today's businesses and its success or failure will judge the viability of any firm in the years to come.

In the UK a domestic energy assessor plays a very prominent role. Due to new national legislation, effective June 1st 2007 each home for sale in England and Wales will be required to get a federal Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) as part of its Home Information Pack (HIP.)

In another two years all rental property will be required to have an EPC as well. 1. 5 million homes are put up for sale in the UK each year, not even taking into account the rental properties. What this says is that a trained DEA will be in high demand.

The National Home Energy Rating, the agency that regulates residential energy compliance, is made up of more than 200 local agencies, more than 130 residential associations, eight energy providers, 900 home builders and 250 architects, surveyors and energy consultants.

The objective of the NHER is to give business and technical support to organizations and persons who wish to improve their homes energy efficiency. These might be home owners, rental community owners, consultants, energy providers or home builders.

The UKs National Energy Services owns and operates the NHER. A subsidiary of the National Energy Foundation, it is a charitable group established in 1988 as fully independent and for the purpose of promoting the conservation of fuel.

Its mission is to provide the kind of assistance that can improve the energy efficiency of all residential UK buildings. The National Energy Services also owns SAVA, the federal agency that trains and assesses every DEA.

The NHER, in conjunction with SAVA, has created an assessment and training program not only for each new energy assessor but also for those who are experienced energy assessors or evaluators and wish to advance to become a certified Domestic Energy Assessor (DEA.)

The training to become a domestic energy assessor is online and classroom based. The training and the assessment program that NHER has developed will qualify each energy assessor for a Level 3 ABBE diploma as a domestic assessor. This qualification is essential for someone who wants to advance even further.

This advanced would be the production of Experienced Practitioner Packages (EPCs.) These are courses that prepare the candidate to fully understand energy rating methodology.

Once the energy assessor is qualified as a DEA, the involvement of the NHER has not ended. The organization also offers an accreditation program as well as its SAVA business network where the assessor can find clients.

For the last 17 years the NHER has been one of the forerunners of the UKs energy efficiency program, and introduced its energy rating program way back in 1990. The training provided for each DEA is rigorous as is the assessment process. The certification as Domestic Energy Assessor instills confidence in the assessors experience and expertise.

Employers don't have time to read through each of your job descriptions to know if you have the skills they need. The design of your resume must do it for them. Your resume should be concise, well-organised and relevant. It should emphasise the most important and relevant points about your experience, skills and education.

Tip 2: Use 'power words'

To control the image that an employer has of you, use power words that match the position you want. Certain words are used frequently by recruiters in their job descriptions. You should study recruiters' advertisements and job descriptions and use these words in your resume and covering letter.

The most powerful words are verbs. And the most powerful verbs are action verbs (describing dynamic activity, as opposed to state).

If, for example, you are applying for a management post, you should use as many management skills power words as possible - and use them in the active form, not passive.

Here are some teaching skills power words:

* advise
* clarify
* coach
* elicit
* enable
* encourage
* explain
* facilitate

Don't talk about 'managing a major turnover'. Talk about 'managing a $27,000,000 turnover'. Don't talk about 'extensive teaching experience'. Talk about '7,000 teaching hours'. Better still, talk about '7,300 teaching hours' - the more precise a figure, the more real it becomes.

Tip 4: Put important information first

List important information at the beginning of your job descriptions. Put statements in your resume in order of importance, impressiveness and relevance to the job you want. A powerful statement with numbers and power words influences every statement that follows.

Tip 5: Sell benefits, not skills

Holiday companies don't sell holidays. They sell relaxation, adventure, sun, sea and sand (the benefits of a holiday). You should not sell your skills (many other people have the same skills). You should sell the benefits of your skills. When you write your skills and past duties, be careful to explain their benefits to the employer.

Tip 6: Solve your employer's (hidden) needs

Employers want people who can solve problems, not create them! Your resume and cover letter should show how you can solve the employer's problems and needs. And in addition to the skills or needs shown in a job advertisement, an employer may have other needs. You should identify these additional needs and show how you can satisfy them too. But concentrate first on the needs listed in the job advertisement. Your additional solutions should come later, after you already have the employer's attention.

Tip 7: Target the job

You will have more success if you adjust your resume and cover letter for the specific skills an employer is seeking. This means that you would write one resume for one particular job and a different, modified, resume for another job. You 're-package' yourself. In that way, an employer will see immediately that you correspond to the job description. It is not dishonest to 're-package' yourself. You are simply presenting yourself and your skills in the best light for a particular employer. This will help you to get more interviews and allow you to apply for a wider range of jobs.

Are there really any ESL jobs for me?

Yes, there are. Rightly or wrongly, the whole world wants to learn English. People everywhere, especially young people, are convinced that speaking good English is their passport to a successful career. What is more, they are being encouraged in this by many governments. Worldwide, there are many more ESL jobs than there are native-speaking EFL teachers to fill them (though it should not be forgotten that English is also taught by perfectly competent non-native teachers). EMT (English mother tongue) teachers are in high demand in virtually all parts of the world. However, EMT teachers may find it more difficult to break into other English-speaking countries. And in general, schools in Western Europe express a preference for teachers with an EU passport as working papers are then automatic.

So where are all these ESL jobs?

Everywhere. Though you must realize that economic conditions in individual countries do impose restrictions on supply and demand. Virtually all parts of the world—Latin America, Asia, Eastern/Central Europe, Western Europe— welcome native-speaking teachers. Africa has some demand, but less so. There is, of course, also demand in English-speaking countries such as the UK, USA and Australia.

Which countries pay best?

If making money is your chief preoccupation you'd be better off becoming a lawyer and going into politics. There are no really rich pickings in teaching, though there are other compensations. However, in comparative terms the highest paying jobs are in Western Europe; the oil-producing countries of the Arabian Gulf; and in Japan, Korea and Taiwan. Some jobs within the English-speaking countries may also be reasonably well paid.

Must I have a university degree to teach English?

A degree is often not required to teach EFL/ESL. The more important qualification is some kind of TEFL certificate. Experience can also count highly. The snag is that in many countries, especially in Asia and the Middle East, a working permit will not be granted without a degree. So a degree is more to satisfy the country's authorities than the language institute's real requirements. With a TEFL certificate, it is certainly possible to find work without a degree, but you should check the country's legal requirements in advance—or be prepared to work illegally, which is not unheard of.

Can my partner go with me?

You can usually take your wife or husband with you if you have been offered a legal job with visa and working permit. However, she or he may not be allowed to work and you may find it difficult to support a dependant on a teacher's income. If, however, your partner is also an EFL teacher, you could probably both find work in the same school or town.

What about taking children abroad?

With a legal job you can usually obtain a resident's visa for your children, though again you may have difficulty in supported them on a teacher's income. There would also be the question of their education, which in some cases would prove exorbitantly expensive.

Should I find a job before going abroad?

Very much up to you and the country in question. If you like adventure, and have a good TEFL certificate—and perhaps a degree for working permit purposes—you might jet off with the reasonable confidence of finding work when you land. If you are a little more staid, or nervous, or cash-strapped, you might do better to fix it all up before leaving. This is six of one and half-a-dozen of the other. Employers in some countries actually prefer to see the whites of your eyes and are not interested in talk of video-conferencing or Internet interviews. Other employers may have agents in your own country and prefer to recruit in that way.

How do I arrange a job from home?

First of all, watch the job advertisements in newspapers and online, and contact possible employers. Check out sites such as TEFL Net ESL Jobs. You can also post your resume online to let employers know that you are available for work.

How do I know that a foreign employer is reputable?

If you are employed by an international organization such as the British Council or International House you have probably already some knowledge of that organization's status and reputation, or can easily verify it. For less well known institutions, try looking on Internet forums for more information or ask the employer to put you in contact with existing or past employees.

Is there a specific time when most jobs start?

Generally speaking, teaching EFL is a year-round business with no particular calendar or holidays. Even if schools employ teachers at the start of their "academic year", teachers leave or additional clients arrive unexpectedly so job opportunities arise during the course of the year. It is true, however, that in Europe there is a particular demand for teachers to start in September or October.

How long a commitment will I have to make?

Most good employers will expect you to sign a contract for at least one year, especially for a job arranged in advance with airfare and accommodation. However, if you are in the country itself, you can often work on a monthly basis if it suits you better. For a few government-sponsored programs—eg, the Peace Corps or JET—a minimum two-year contract is obligatory.

Do I have to get a work permit and residence visa?

To work legally in a foreign country you need a work permit, with which you can then get a resident's visa. You should be aware that working in a foreign country without a work permit is usually a criminal offence in that country and you render yourself liable to imprisonment, fines and/or deportation. Having said that, many EFL teachers do work illegally in many parts of the world.

So how do I get this work permit?

You won't get any work permit without a job, or at least a firm job offer. Once you have that, your employer will normally sponsor you and take care of the necessary paperwork.

Who will I be teaching?

This depends to some extent on the school, but in general all kinds of people are learning English. You may be asked to teach students of all ages, of all levels, in groups or one-to-one, general English, business English, exam preparation and so on. The more flexible you are in this respect the more hours you will probably get. Schools are usually quite sensitive to their teachers' capabilities and will try to match you to the most appropriate students.

What are typical working hours?

Schools in most countries will expect you to work five days a week, with 20 to 25 contact hours (plus preparation time). Depending on your contract—full-time or hourly—you may have something like 6 or 8 weeks of paid holidays (if you're paid by the hour you may get no paid holidays, just a higher hourly rate). In some of the better paid Asian countries such as Korea or Japan you may be required to teach much longer hours and receive less time for holidays. You should be aware that though it may not seem much, 25 contact hours a week is actually more than enough for most human beings, and anything over that—especially on a long-term basis—can be quite strenuous.

How much will I be paid?

Not enough! :-( Don't enter TEFL for money's sake. It's difficult to quantify earnings as they vary so much from country to country and are in any event relative. In most places, with a reputable employer, you will earn enough to get by comfortably in local terms. However, very few countries or jobs will allow you to live well and save money. In general, you need to consider the cost of living of the country you are in. For example, a miserable pittance in Eastern Europe may in fact allow you to live better than a relatively high monthly salary in Japan.

What currency will I be paid in?

Almost always you will be paid in the local currency.

Will I earn enough to send money home?

Unlikely, unless you are particularly frugal. In the Middle East and some Asian countries, you may be able to save worthwhile amounts of money to send home. Elsewhere, you are unlikely to be able to save much, if anything, and may in any case find that exchange controls make it impossible to repatriate your savings.

What happens with taxes?

If you are legally employed you will usually be taxed at source and pay taxes and other relevant charges to the local government.

What about accommodation?

You are more likely to have accommodation arranged and perhaps paid for or subsidized if you secure a job in advance with a contract of one year or more, especially for jobs in Asia or the Middle East. You may find, however, that you are expected to share such accommodation with other teachers.

And travel? Will the school pay for it?

Again, for contracts arranged overseas in advance, travel is often paid for. It is much more difficult to get travel subsidies for jobs that you sign up for on the spot.

Will I have health insurance?

Many countries outside Europe and North America have little or no national health service and you will need to check with the school whether they provide private cover, or be prepared to pay a little extra to sign up for a local healthcare programme.

What about private lessons?

In general, employment contracts exclude the possibility of taking on private students without prior permission from your employer. However, if your regular teaching is going well, many employers will not prevent you from taking on private students (as long as you find them yourself and do not take them from the employer).

What if I really don't fit with the job or the country?

Most employers know that an unhappy teacher is a bad teacher. If you are genuinely unhappy with your position, they will often allow you to quit as soon as they can find a replacement. If, however, they have incurred costs such as travel or visa arrangements, you may be required to repay some or all of those costs. In general, you should thoroughly research the job and country you are going to in advance to avoid such a situation.

These days a top MBA is almost a prerequisite in order to reach senior or even mid-management levels at many of the major consulting firms. The leading strategy consultancies in particular have redoubled their recruiting efforts: McKinsey hired over five hundred MBAs in 2005 and this figure was set to rise in 2006; Booz Allen Hamilton, BCG, Bain and IBM Consulting all hired over one hundred MBAs in 2005 and were expecting increases again in 2006. By comparison, the larger banks have been hiring as few as two hundred MBAs a year and the numbers relating to the technology and industry sectors are significantly lower again.

According to the 2005 TopMBA.com Recruitment and Salary Survey, demand for MBAs in the consultancy sector rose by a colossal 35% in just twelve months (June 2004-5), and it's a trend that looks set to continue. The dip in economy and the consulting market at the start of the decade meant that many consultants used the time to study for an MBA; now that the market is on the rise again, consultancies are looking to these MBA graduates with prior consulting experience to meet their needs.

More MBAs hired from non-consulting backgrounds.

There are also an increasing number of MBA graduates who are being hired from a non-consulting background. Cambridge University's Judge Business School, for example, reports that in 2005 only 13% of those entering a consulting career post-MBA had previous experience in the field. Similarly, at INSEAD Business School in France the number of graduates being hired into consulting from different backgrounds, such as industry, rose from 36% to 47% in one year (2003-4). What is behind the change? Consultancies are recognising the diversity and wealth of experience and expertise that candidates from a non-consulting background can bring, particularly as the average age and work history of MBA students rises. There is an increasing need for consultants with specialist skills and knowledge and these attributes can often be acquired outside the consulting profession.

Strong UK market attracts more MBAs than anywhere else in Europe.

Demand for MBA graduates is particularly strong in the UK. The healthy economy and policy to attract highly skilled migrants make it the most popular destination for European MBA graduates. Overall the UK drew 23% of INSEAD students in 2005 and of those choosing to remain within western Europe, it attracted an enormous 37% (the next most popular destination being France with 18% and Germany with 8%).

Consulting remains a highly lucrative option for MBA graduates. According to the 2005 annual report from the London Business School, earnings for consulting jobs outweighed those in both finance and industry, averaging at £65,000 per annum before bonuses. This compares with an average figure of £58,000 for those who found jobs in the finance sector and £55,000 for those in industry. Employees also received an average annual bonus of £25,000 and a sign-on bonus in the region of £10,500. Companies are also attempting to lure in the brightest graduates by offering a range of perks, from company cars to all-expenses-paid days out.

Lifestlye and choice are stronger motivations than salary.

Interestingly, though, the reason that are given by the majority of MBA graduates for making consulting their preferred career choice is not high salaries. According to the students, the real motivation for making the move into consulting is the career and lifestyle options it can bring - the opportunity to find a stimulating and varied role with the chance to progress in different directions.
