Getting more clients starts with getting your foot in the door. A great one-liner can be your door man, and get more customers and partners to come in and start a relationship with your company. Before anyone is going to do business with you, they must first understand why you are in business in the first place. While this may seem obvious to you, each new person you meet needs to hear your story in a way that will make them want to be a part of it. That first simple sentence can make all the difference. A great one-liner makes you stand out from the crowd and can turn casual conversations into the beginnings of great business deals. How? A concise explanation of your company in the form of a savvy one-liner shows that you know what you do, you're clever and it will sink into the mind of your target client immediately just like a one-liner in a movie. That one memorable line that stays with you, long after the popcorn and candy have been eaten and the lights have come up. You remember the feeling that line invoked in you and it makes you want to come back for more. A great one liner, gets you your first yes, in the form of a, "Tell me more," response. That way when you start your pitch, your prospect is already hooked.

How many times do you get asked, so what do you do? When talking to anyone you meet who could be a potential client or might know or have relationships with people who are potential clients, your goal is to earn the right to keep talking, to incite curiosity and to get them to ask you to talk more. This initial answer to that question is not meant to be a full explanation of your entire life's work. Instead the intent here is to get them interested and to get them to ask you a question so you can tell them more. To be memorable you must be different.

It immediately gets a person with any connection to entrepreneurs to say, "How do you do that?" if they're truly interested. Most people make the mistake of launching into their pitch too quickly without giving a short and informative amount of information about their company. By using a teasing one-liner you tell the main benefit that your company provides and who your target market is before launching into details that may not be required or desired. If your prospect is interested after hearing your one-liner they will want to know more and ask for that information rather than you forcing it on them. The goal of the one-liner isn't to sell it's to continue a qualified conversation.

Once you've gotten past the one-liner, you have to be able to deliver a sixty second introduction to your business that compels investors and customers to want to learn more about you. This is your elevator pitch and you need to craft it strategically without making it rigid. You should have all of the points you want to express in mind, but be sure not to make it sound like a canned speech. No one wants to hear a pre-recorded spiel. Your pitch needs to begin with a hook such as a compelling customer example. You should have several in mind that you can tell based on who you're talking to. If you're speaking with a restaurateur you can use an example of another restaurant or similar type of service establishment that used your product or services and then tell your prospect (using numbers if possible) the benefits that they received. Then you need to answer the question "Who are you?" In your pitch you need to talk about your company, not just the product or service it provides. You also need to paint a picture in an individual's mind about how you can solve customer problems. Ask them pointed questions, so you can tailor your comments to be relevant to them.

Also, remember that all verbal communication has a non-verbal component. Make sure your body language conveys enthusiasm, knowledge, confidence, openness, and friendliness. Your body language needs to be non-threatening and not feel pushy. People like to do business with people they like. Even in situations where one vendor is better qualified than another, most people will still end up picking the one they like better. Don't forget that business decisions are made by people and people making decisions based on emotion and then justify them with facts, not the other way around. So it is important to come across as a likeable person. If you don't get them to like you, often your professional competence will become irrelevant. Crossed arms, encroaching on someone's personal space and looking at your watch are unacceptable actions. Eye contact should show attention and interest, but not feel forced on unnatural. With that said, you must remember to mirror the demeanor of your audience. If they're jacked up on caffeine and excited, get excited while you're talking to them and mirror their mannerisms. If they're laid back and calm, mirror that behavior. The non-verbal component to your one-liner and pitch are critical, so have your wits about you and don't rely on your well-chosen words to do all of the work for you. A great way to reinforce non-verbal communication is by taking a speech and debate class or by joining a club like Toast Masters, a group that has regional branches, is relatively inexpensive for weekly meetings and gives members the opportunity to practice any kind of public speaking. Business owners should know that an uncanny parallel exists between business survival and the survival of a marriage. A nationally representative survey conducted by the Census Bureau shows that in every age group except 25 and under, the proportion of divorced people exceeded one in eight, and for those 40 and older it exceeded one in three.

Contradictory information subsists concerning the failure rate of business startups, but Mark Hendricks, (Entrepreneur Startup Magazine, March 2006) states, "the SBA, using U.S. Census Bureau data, reports that almost half of new firms with at least one employee survive beyond four years." But it stands to reason that if almost half of new businesses survive, then a little more than half fail.

From my personal experience, I know a successful online business or home business exemplifies the same characteristics of a successful marriage or relationship. In 1976, as a student at Sam Houston High School in Houston, Texas, my most valuable education came from my first love, and I pass six lessons along to you in hopes that you receive great personal and business value from it.

1) Everybody Deserves What They Desire. My first "real" girlfriend came about in my senior year in high school -- most of the girls I liked, saw me as their brother. Nevertheless, seeing couples being cozy, boys carrying their girlfriends' books as they walked to class, and sharing a coke or a kiss, always appealed to me.

Being politely turned downed never stopped me from "dreaming" about the day when I would have a girl of my own. Much in the same way I fantasized about untold riches and the finer things in life after reading success stories found in Entrepreneur Magazine, Income Opportunities and other business periodicals.

In fact, dreaming helped me to believe I could take $20.00 at age 20 and start my first publishing business which 14 years later was grossing $500,000.00 per year. It all stemmed from accepting as truth that I deserved more than I had and could have what I desired.

2) Good Things Come To Those Who Take Action. My fortune changed the day Pamela walked into the women's store at the local mall which employed me as a porter (a lesson itself in humility). Catching my eye several times at school, she stood out as a cutie pie -- maybe even out of my league.

Approaching her would be uncharted territory for me, and made me very apprehensive. Being at work, the atmosphere betrayed my confidence, and a million other excuses filled my head telling me why I shouldn't speak to her, although my heart told me, "now or never."

Business counselors will advise you to save a minimum of six months' income, secure financing, develop an extensive business plan, etc. However, the majority of the people I know who own and run successful businesses ran counter to this advice because they knew action begets action.

3) A Poor Dog Won't Wag It's Own Tail. In the old days, a gold prospector's first concern centered on protecting his interests; to let the world know about his business; that he saw it first; it belonged to him and him alone. These early entrepreneurs knew they needed to keep competitors from stealing what rightfully belonged to them.

In many cases, it was simply a sign at the beginning of an opening in a mountain, while others either directly or indirectly put out the word in the community. Either way it was a lesson in marketing that I subconsciously applied to dating that when applied later to business taught me several more valuable lessons.

I asked Pamela for her phone number; we chatted a few days later; I asked her to "go with me" and she said "yes." One of the first things I wanted to do was "market our relationship" by giving her a "promise ring" to let the world know she "belonged" to me, to "stake my claim," so to speak.

As their practices expand, dentists are likely to hire more dental hygienists and dental assistants to handle routine services.

Dentists will increasingly provide care and instruction aimed at preventing the loss of teeth, rather than simply providing treatments such as fillings. Improvements in dental technology also will allow dentists to offer more effective and less painful treatment to their patients.

Dentists diagnose, prevent, and treat problems with teeth or mouth tissue. They remove decay, fill cavities, examine x rays, place protective plastic sealants on children's teeth, straighten teeth, and repair fractured teeth. They also perform corrective surgery on gums and supporting bones to treat gum diseases. Dentists extract teeth and make models and measurements for dentures to replace missing teeth. They provide instruction on diet, brushing, flossing, the use of fluorides, and other aspects of dental care. They also administer anesthetics and write prescriptions for antibiotics and other medications.

Dentists use a variety of equipment, including x-ray machines; drills; and instruments such as mouth mirrors, probes, forceps, brushes, and scalpels. They wear masks, gloves, and safety glasses to protect themselves and their patients from infectious diseases.

Dentists in private practice oversee a variety of administrative tasks, including bookkeeping and buying equipment and supplies. They may employ and supervise dental hygienists, dental assistants, dental laboratory technicians, and receptionists.

Most dentists are general practitioners, handling a variety of dental needs. Other dentists practice in any of nine specialty areas. Orthodontists, the largest group of specialists, straighten teeth by applying pressure to the teeth with braces or retainers.

The next largest group, oral and maxillofacial surgeons, operates on the mouth and jaws. The remainder may specialize as pediatric dentists (focusing on dentistry for children); periodontists (treating gums and bone supporting the teeth); prosthodontists (replacing missing teeth with permanent fixtures, such as crowns and bridges, or with removable fixtures such as dentures); endodontists (performing root canal therapy); public health dentists (promoting good dental health and preventing dental diseases within the community); oral pathologists (studying oral diseases); or oral and maxillofacial radiologists (diagnosing diseases in the head and neck through the use of imaging technologies).

Dental hygienists remove soft and hard deposits from teeth, teach patients how to practice good oral hygiene, and provide other preventive dental care.

Dental assistants perform a variety of patient care, office, and laboratory duties. They make patients as comfortable as possible in the dental chair, prepare them for treatment, and obtain their dental records.

When patients require a special appliance to chew and speak well, their health care providers send requests to dental laboratory technicians.

After fabrication, medical appliance technicians test devices for proper alignment, movement, and stability using meters and alignment fixtures. They also may fit the appliance on the patient and adjust them as necessary. Over time the appliance will wear down, so technicians must repair and maintain the device.

Most dentists work 4 or 5 days a week. Some work evenings and weekends to meet their patients' needs. Most full-time dentists work between 35 and 40 hours a week, but others work more. Initially, dentists may work more hours as they establish their practice. Experienced dentists often work fewer hours. Many continue in part-time practice well beyond the usual retirement age.

Most dentists are solo practitioners, meaning that they own their own businesses and work alone or with a small staff. Some dentists have partners, and a few work for other dentists as associate dentists.

Dentistry requires diagnostic ability and manual skills. Dentists should have good visual memory, excellent judgment regarding space and shape, a high degree of manual dexterity, and scientific ability. Good business sense, self-discipline, and good communication skills are helpful for success in private practice. High school and college students who want to become dentists should take courses in biology, chemistry, physics, health, and mathematics.

Dental schools require a minimum of 2 years of college-level predental education, regardless of the major chosen. However, most dental students have at least a bachelor's degree. Predental education emphasizes coursework in science, and many applicants to dental school major in a science such as biology or chemistry, while other applicants major in another subject and take many science courses as well. A few applicants are accepted to dental school after 2 or 3 years of college and complete their bachelor's degree while attending dental school.

All dental schools require applicants to take the Dental Admissions Test (DAT). When selecting students, schools consider scores earned on the DAT, applicants' grade point averages, and information gathered through recommendations and interviews.

Dental school usually lasts 4 academic years. Studies begin with classroom instruction and laboratory work in basic sciences, including anatomy, microbiology, biochemistry, and physiology. Beginning courses in clinical sciences, including laboratory techniques, also are provided at this time. During the last 2 years, students treat patients, usually in dental clinics, under the supervision of licensed dentists. Some dental school graduates work for established dentists as associates for 1 to 2 years to gain experience and save money to equip an office of their own. Most dental school graduates, however, purchase an established practice or open a new one immediately after graduation.

Of course, no matter how supportive your family and friends are, they are not going to be happy if you work 15 hours a day. Make sure that you ask for uninterrupted time to do your job or run your business, but also make sure that you schedule time for your family and friends. While you are making up that schedule, don't forget your significant other. If you sit at your computer all evening after the children are tucked away for the night, you may end up with some serious relationship issues!

Once your family and friends are involved and you've scheduled time for them in your life, it is time to consider a few ways to make the most of your valuable work time. While you may be tempted to work non-stop during the time you have dedicated to your business, you should actually try to take some breaks. Taking a half-hour walk or having lunch away from your desk can really help you recharge your mind and keeps your body from growing stiff and tired.
